Description
Beth Donleycott with her (actually my) Shetland Pony with flaxen mane and tail in Cary North Carolina in the early 1970s. When Redwing was brought to our home, she was "foundered," because her hooves were so long she was barely able to walk. I had to soak her legs in a pail of Epsom Salts every day, and the Farrior (blacksmith) had to come every few days and trim just a little off of her hooves, until she could walk again... Eventually, she could even run and jump over small jumps. When she would get tired of the children riding her, she would give me a look that I knew she had had enough. Because she had a hard time getting to walk, she was very safe for the children to ride... and I sincerely connected with her... I managed to give her three (3) years of life and pastures and freedom to roam... Sometimes she was so clever that she roamed more than she should.... She would figure out the the electric fence wasn't working and go out under it to other peoples' property. When she showed up, they would call me to come get her. LOVED that pony!
