Title
Rudderless in Reality--Sailboat Watercolor
Artist
Catherine Ludwig Donleycott
Medium
Painting - Watercolor On 300 Lb. Arches Cold-pressed Paper
Description
Impressionistic watercolor of a sailboat with a sailor--trying to weather a storm--hunkered down under a tarp on a cold stormy day. Photo from Cape Hattaras National Seashore (OBX) obviously missing a lot of the realistic tools needed for control. "Rudderless in Reality" is a 22 X 30 watercolor on 300 lb. Arches Cold-pressed Watercolor paper.
Signed just "Cathie" in the late 70s and titled "Rudderless in Reality, because I had no idea who I was going to be as an "unmarried woman." It is just an impressionistic sailboat that I admired and painted BEFORE I even knew how to sail... or live.
The original watercolor "Rudderless in Reality" now resides in a collection in Florida.

Being a watercolor artist myself, I always gravitate towards your outstanding watercolors when I visit your gallery. You have such command of the media! I really like the muted palette in this painting. Fav
Catherine Ludwig Donleycott replied:
Thank you so much Anne, and that painting was done such a long time ago. I have been unable to paint in watercolor for quite awhile due to my returning to Oils and commissions for them, but I am hoping to get back to them this summer. Your comments help to increase my motivation to do so.

Catherine, CONGRATULATIONS! Your work has been featured in the Home Page of The ARTIST BUZzz Group! You are cordially invited to POST image embed links for this distinction to the šGAs -Features Archive -2022 thread in the discussion tab. Thank you for your glimpse of beauty! Catherine, I am always awed by the depths of emotion your works evoke, the intersection of darkened sky is symbollic as is the palette. I have read two intersected lines is the Chinese symbol for danger or crisisā¦surely, not coincidental to this piece. Beautifully paintedā¦FAV
Catherine Ludwig Donleycott replied:
Thank you Laurel. I really appreciate your insight into my work. I guess something was guiding me to intersect those lines... as it was a very dangerous time in my life and for that sailboat!

I love your sailboat series! The sky in this one shows off watercolor technique at it's best (isn't it fun?), and I like the subdued color palette in this one, with the mostly grays accentuated by the warm tones of the boat (and just enough in the water to carry my eye around the composition.) like/f
